Let’s VOTE YES For The Protection Of The Thresher Sharks

The Philippines is known as one of the best diving destinations in the world. Many of you have swam with the butandings or whale sharks in Oslog, Cebu, and you perfectly know how fascinating it is to be swimming with these sea creatures.

But have you ever done diving with the thresher sharks?

Some of you may already have, but did you know that the Philippines is the only place in the world where you can actually dive with the thresher sharks? Yes, that’s exactly true! The Monad Shoal in Malapascua, Cebu, is a top diving spot for thresher sharks in the country. Some scuba divers have also spotted thresher sharks in Apo Reef, Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro; Burias Pass; Tubbataha Reef; Moalboal, Cebu; and Apo Island, Dauin, Negros Oriental.

These diving spots of thresher sharks have attracted many local and foreign tourist, thereby, boosting the eco-tourism in the country and helping the livelihood of the people living the surrounding communities, especially in Malapascua, Daanbantayan, Cebu, which makes up 80% of the municipal economy. Unfortunately, due to the devastation brought by the Typhoon Yolanda in 2013, the illegal and senseless fishing of these thresher sharks, the population of thresher sharks may significantly decrease as these thresher sharks have low potential reproductive potential, and can negatively impact the livelihood and local tourism in Cebu. But there’s one thing that we can do to help protect these thresher sharks.

This is our chance, as a nation, to let our voices be heard at the upcoming 17th Conference of Parties (CoP), to be held from September 24 to October 5, 2016, in Johannesburg, South Africa. The proposal is to list all thresher shark species in the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Appendix II, which implements the controlled trade of sharks, and to avoid these species from being threatened with extinction.

The Philippine delegation plays a significant participation in this conference not only for the successful passing of the proposal for the protection of the thresher sharks on a global scale but also for the preservation of the local eco-tourism in the country.

Let us join hands to push the Philippine delegation to VOTE YES for the protection of the thresher sharks. Join in by signing the petition here: Philippines VOTE YES for the Threshers.
