Meet Steven Romero: The Runner Who Took the Challenge and Exceeded Himself

Hello Coach/Pacer Supladong Irish Runner ako po yung pinacing niyo kahapon sa RU2. I’m really thankful po throughout the run at hindi niyo po ako pinabayaan at iniwan. Every water station sasabihin niyo sakin na “hydrate well but not too much”, every water station nagkukusa po kayo na bigyan/abutan ng water/gatorade, every water station nagkukusa din po kayo na icool down ang body temp. ko sa pagbuhos ng cold water/water, during the run nagbibigay kayo ng mga small tips/advice which is to help me to focus on my goal, in every 200m-300m before the water station “water station… hydrate well” or 200m-300m before the portalets sasabihin niyo “may magcc-r ba?”, tinatanong niyo po ako if i want to walk a bit, if i want to take a rest or cool down, if i’m still good.

The last 5km. Ito po yung part na napapa isip ako if kakayanin ko pa bang sabayan kayo at umabot sa target time na 3:30. Medyo nakaramdam ako ng konting sakit under my left foot, hindi ko lang sure kung anong tawag don. Kasi after 22km and every water stations, binubuhusan ko ng cold water ang mga binti’t tuhod at hilamos ng mukha to keep me alive. Dahil dun nabasa na din sapatos, medyos at paa ko.

The last 4km. Ito yung time na medyo bumagal ako at dahil nga sumakit ang ilalim ng left foot ko. So i need to slow down a bit and take a breathe. Nung medyo lumalayo kayo ng 250m-450m you keep always looking back at nagbibigay ng thumbs up if i’m good or something. Nung mga time na yon i was thinking na i think mauuna or iiwan na ako ng pacer ko dahil may target time siya na goal. But i was strong, inintay niyo po ako and still pinupush at motivate niyo ako to not to stop.

The last 3km. I think ito yung time na 50/50 na talaga at nawawalan na ako ng pag asa to achieve the 3:30 at my goal was to finish nalang sana with the time of sub-4. Then.. suddenly in the middle of the road sabi niyo sakin “just wait… and i’ll catch you up” napa isip ako kung bakit then nakita ko nalang na papunta kayo ng 7Eleven store at first wala akong idea kung bakit kayo pumunta don. Then while on your way to 7Eleven store sabi niyo… “don’t stop steven! tuloy ka lang”. Then after 400m-600m i think nandon na kayo at wala akong clue kung bakit kayo nagpunta ng 7Eleven, ayun pala bumili kayo ng chocolate bar which is kitkat at binigay niyo sakin ito to keep me alive at sabi niyo medyo kulang na ako sa sugar or something. Kinain ko ito at after ilang minutes medyo nabuhayan ako at nagboost ang body ko to run harder even though medyo bumabagal na ako.

The last 2km up to the finish line. Nung nakikita niyo akong chine-check ko ang gps watch ko time to time, sabi niyo “stop looking at your watch it will just stress you out”. Kasi i was thinking if aabot pa kaya ako ng 3:30? or i’ll just finish it with sub-4 time. Last push na ito at sabi niyo sakin, sprint!!!!!!!! sprint!!!!!!!!! 1.5km nalang, 1km nalang, go!!!!!!!!!! “Block the pain. Think about the finish line.”, ngayon ka pa magqquit?, let’s go!!!!!!!!! last 500m nalang, sprint!!!!!!!! last 300m last push na yan and huminga ako ng malalim at nagsprint ako all the way to the finish line. The moment na naka tapak ako ng finish line my inner reaction was like….. “BOOOOO YAHHH!” that feeling na nakatakbo kana ng 32km ay biglang nawala lahat yung pagod ko nung nakatapak sa finish line.

I think if titignan ko yung time ko sa chip time when i step sa start and finish line my unofficial time was 3:29:49 if ever sa chip time po siguro based on my gps watch. Pero if titignan naman sa gun start time, we’re just 5-6 minutes late sa 3:30 even though it’s unofficial time but either way that was a strong finished for me dahil na beat ko ang P.R. ko from my 1st 32km with the time of more than 4:00 or even 4:30+. 2nd 32km run ko po yan which is a better result for me. I almost beat my 21km P.R. too ng 2 minutes faster sana but it’s okay, all matter is i have a new P.R. for my 32km. Maraming salamat po Coach/Pacer!! for helping me out, for pushing me to the limits and for everything. All I can say is that I #Exceeded myself and got stronger. Till next time. God bless us all!
