Jr. NBA – Jr. WNBA Philippines Announces 2015 All Stars and Coaches of the Year

First introduced in 2007, the Jr. NBA Philippines has become the most anticipated annual sports youth event for basketball enthusiasts aged 10 to 14 years old. To further expand its reach, in 2014, the program was extended to include Jr. WNBA.

This 2015, as the program gears on its eighth year, the program kicked off in January with the tip off ceremony held at the British School Manila, which included a Coaches’ clinic. The program aims to discover and nurture young talents who have the passion for basketball and are able to embrace the STAR Values. This is in alignment with Alaska’s mission to emphasize the importance of good nutrition and the right values in developing champions.

The program has reached out to approximately 10,000 students, parents, coaches and beneficiaries.

During Phase 1, the Jr. NBA – Jr. WNBA Team, with Coach Jeffrey Cariaso at the helm, conducted basketball clinics in different schools and communities in the metro and in strategic locations around the country. Jeff Cariaso is the current the Basketball Director for Alaska Basketball Powercamp and Jr. NBA – Jr. WNBA programs.

Phase 2: Regional Selection Camp.

Regional Selection Camps were conducted to identify high potential athletes who possess the fundamental skills of basketball handling and the STAR values. The Jr.NBA – Jr. WNBA team conducted seven Regional Selection Camps this year, which included Puerto Princesa, Binan, Iloilo, Baguio, Bacolod, Davao and Metro Manila. Simultaneously, an exclusive selection process was also conducted for the participants of the Alaska Basketball Powercamp, which was held in Ateneo de Manila University, Subic, Lucena and Cebu. The selection camp saw some returning campers from last year’s National Training Camp like Luisa Krizelle San Juan and Akemi Marteja. Through their determination to achieve their goal, some campers from Metro Manila had to join the selection camp as far north as Baguio.

A total of 70 boys and 24 girls have qualified for the National Training Camp.

Phase 3: National Training Camp.

The three – day camp was met with excitement as campers from around the country, along with the Coach of the Year finalists, checked in at the H2O Hotel Manila. This year’s guest coaches are WNBA Star Ruth Riley & Philadelphia Sixers’ Nerlens Noel, who quipped that they are excited to be part of the National Training Camp and to share their skills and to further help instil the Jr. NBA – Jr. WNBA core values to the campers.

The bootcamp, which was held at the PICC Forum, kicked off with basketball drills and skills trainings followed by team scrimmages to help the campers polish their skills. Through these activities, the core coaches are able to determine the athletes who exude the core values of the program. Later on, the coaches admitted that they had a tough time choosing the All Stars to represent Jr. NBA – Jr. WNBA Philippines.

As the camp progresses, the drills became tougher. Proper hydration and nutrition were highly stressed among the campers. In response to this, Alaska made sure that a bottomless milk, in vanilla and chocolate flavours, were available at the Alaska Milk Bar.

Mind you, it’s not all trainings and drills for the campers. They also got the opportunity to have a tour of the Oceanarium at the Manila Ocean Park Adventure.

The final day of the National Training Camp was held at SM MOA Music Hall, which was highlighted by the NBA Cares program for the benefit of the kids under the care of Children’s Hour, and the Jr. NBA Philippines Alumni All Star Game.

Hardwork really pays off. As the cliche goes, “No pain. No Gain.”

Jr. NBA – Jr. WNBA is not just about a teaching the fundamentals of basketball handling. It’s also about core STAR values – Sportsmanship, Teamwork, positive Attitude, and Respect. And add up to that, the values that Alaska believes in which are Discipline, Determination and Hard work.

The National Training Camp concluded with the announcement of the 2015 Jr. NBA and Jr. WNBA All Stars, and the Coaches of the Year. Special Awards were also given to the campers who have shown exemplary performance during the three-day event.

It was the moment of truth. Hope and excitement can be traced from each of the camper’s face, not to mention a streak of nervousness.

From a pool of 70 boys and 24 girls, choosing the Top 10 Boys and Top 5 Girls wasn’t an easy job for the coaches. For the past three days, they’ve been observing and grading each of the campers. Everyone did a great job, on and off court. But there were a handful few who really stood out from the rest.

As Jr. NBA Philippines Coach Chris Sumner took to the floor, he reminded all the campers that if they don’t get selected, “they should make it as their motivation to work harder.”
